Remember the fish in rin's dream? the animal that is most suitable image to illustrate not only Rin, but also Haruka and Makoto is a supposedly a fish trapped in a small aquarium since they fled from their biggest fears and anxiety...in which i believe rin's dream have some resemblance to it...
Let's start from Haruka. In the anime, Haruka love of the water played as comedy and fanservice, but there are a bit of small detail left out from the LN in which that Haruka rely on water as healing methods.
When in the water, Haru can forget about all the anxiety and emotions. Haruka is a big introvert (not only when he was tired too much interaction with other people, but also he could not express his feelings very well). but many people think Haruka "Haru has no feelings". Especially for people who do not really take the time to observe what is behind the face of a minimal expression.
From the anime we some times see Haru quoting his grandmother, but never quoted the words of his parents. I do not want to think about the possibility of extreme child neglect, but at least it is clear that Haru is not close to his parents.
Maybe her parents are busy type (at least I still remember his mother Haru still has not arrived at the hospital when Haru opened eyes after drowning in the river in the High Speed! Ch.2).
Haruka is probably from the beginning a silent kid (in the sense difficult to express his feelings) so it is difficult for the parents to get close and express affection to Haru.
or Maybe they are the type of parents who encourage their children to be independent / self-sufficient from the earliest possible age (be a tough boy! Or something along that line). Whatever it is, the result is clear: Haru difficult to open up to others. Haru so extremely sensitive to rejection.
More than that, Haru has some sort of talent complex. Still remember the narration at the beginning eps.1 Haru? "When you're ten, they call you a prodigy. When you're fifteen, they call you a genius. Once you hit twenty, you're just an ordinary person. About three years untill I'm ordinary. Man .. . I can not wait to be ordinary. " Haru want people to see him as a man, separated from his swimming talent. Some people close to Haru because of his talent (Nagisa, Rei), and some hated and left Haru because of his talent (Rin, anyone?)
That's why, at the end of words Rin eps. 7 have a destructive effect on Haru. When defeated Haru, Rin said, "I'll never swim with you again. Never." Clearly audible to Haru like: 'I just saw your talent. I never even thought of you as a friend. I've managed to overcome you, so you are not needed anymore. I'm free of you. Good-bye. "
From rin initial move to Iwatobi elementary school, Haruka already not feeling to good about it. (Haru is really Perceptive, guys). Yeah, who the hell would choose to change schools one or two months before graduation? And said it was all just a coincidence too, but it's not just elementary, but up to the swim club as well (Haru and Rin Makoto already familiar from earlier pool match.) From the beginning Haru already guessed that Rin wanted to use him and Makoto to participate and win the medley relay.
But in the process of galvanizing themselves into the best team, they truly become friends. Rin even tell the real motivation to follow the relay, and no longer angry or hate Rin after hearing about Rin's father dreams that never materialized.
Makoto... I do not even know where to begin. From episode 2 we were shown Makoto home situation. Harmonious family ... father-mother that is loving and caring, the brother and sister that are funny and very close to her brother. In the school and the surrounding neighborhood Makoto is known as a good person, friendly, and reliable. At first glance we see Makoto as perfect character.
But we also remember that Makoto has a very deep fear of the water, and the cause may seem shallow / absurd.
Let's re-look at the nature of Makoto. Makoto world constructed mostly by family and friends as the main element in it. When they are happy, Makoto feel happy. As they grieve, Makoto also feel sad. That's why, he always tried to treat people (especially those close to him) as good as possible.
But no matter how hard he tried, there was one thing he could not deal with: death. No matter how good he try, the pet goldfish die in the end. Just like the fishermen who drowned just three kilometers from the beach. Death is a thing that can not be circumvented by any hard effort. And Makoto could not accept it well. he still replace fresh flowers at the grave of his goldfish after five years.
Bonus: Makoto also have a fear of the dark. In terms of psychology, this phobia is closely related to separation anxiety.
Worse, Makoto also do not like showing weakness to others. Just like Haruka. He is also not very good at asking for help / rely on other people. (remember when rei almost drowned?) Just like Haruka.
Rin... let's try to find the root of the problem.
Rin lost a father figure at a very young age (Before elementary?). I can understand that children who lose a parent when he is a child has a tendency to blame themselves. It is evident from the choice of words when told about his father to Nitori. "My dad is the best swimmer in Iwatobi. His dream is to become an Olympic swimmer. But he never realize that dream. He is married, and have me (as a child). He became a fisherman. Then later die." How many feelings of guilt and self-hatred that I see there? Rin felt her father had to give up to reach the Olympics and ended up dead as a fisherman because of him. Self-Loathing, much?
That's why he wants to realize his father's dream. More precisely, Rin feels responsible for his father's dream. This is the starting point of obsession Rin which will involve Haruka. And the reason he is a little more obsessed with Haruka's talent.
The first step is to pursue the shadow of his father: winning medley relay as part of the Iwatobi Swim Club (old swimming club demolished in eps. 2). To that end, Rin is changing schools before graduation, and even lived with his grandmother.
Rin already know Haruka and Makoto swimming ability, and the first thing he did after changing school was to move close to them and persuade them to go with him to medley relay. Makoto quickly familiarized with Rin (because it is his nature) but Haruka still skeptical in the beginning. but, at the time of the race, they actually managed to become friends, not just a team or compatriots.
From the beginning of Rin is obsessed with Haruka. Before medley, when there is free time, he would try to beat Haruka record time. Rin always felt Haruka has a special talent that she never had.
And Rin hate how Haruka ignore his talent. (Swim only to feel the water? There is nothing in like that in his dictionary). Even though he was trying hard, really hard he still could not beat Haruka in the 100m freestyle several years later.
And see for yourself what we are dealing with defeat of Rin Haruka when they were grade 1 junior high (which is to make Haru decided to quit to pursue competitive swimming).
Thus he decided to be able to reach the Olympics, there is a wall that he had to beat: Haruka. From this point Rin stopped to regard haru as a friend and go back to square one: Haruka as a springboard / footing.
[Well, I can not tolerate this shit. At least do not drag people down with you when you're in misery. Having a tragic past does not justify you treating your friends like tools / garbage. Stop taking it out at your friends! For crying out loud, they're human being who have heart too!]
Rin too busy chasing the shadows of his father so much that he does not know (or just do not care) how many people he hurt in the process. Rin in a small world, only himself and his father.
Summary.
So if seen again, the three of them together are still trapped in something. Significantly different is how they deal with (read: escape from) a reality.
Haruka run away from his own emotions (and also the inability to express emotions) by way of the arms plunge into the water.
Makoto fear of separation / death in the form of a phobia of water.
Rin tried to account his guilt for his father's death by trying to realize the dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer, no matter who he should take advantage of (or even harm) others to realize that goal.
The three of them are still a fish caught in a small glass bowl, and do not realize that they themselves created bulkhead divider with wide world out there.
